DESIGNART Tokyo 2026

30 October – 8 November 2026

Ripple Design Outpost, Minato City, Tokyo

This October, we’re taking part in DESIGNART Tokyo and celebrating our first year in Japan with Me and you, we’re not that different, right? A week of conversations, creative sessions and gatherings at our Tokyo Outpost.

At the heart of it is an exhibition by Emirati artist Shaikha Alketbi, whose work draws on four years of living and working in Japan.

Throughout the program, we’ll be welcoming old friends and new faces from the UAE and Japan to look at what we share, exchange stories and ideas, and see what might happen when different perspectives meet.

A chance to get to know each other a little better, one conversation at a time.

Me and you, we’re not that different, right? An exhibition by Shaikha AlKetbi.

Friday 30th October – Sunday 8th November, 10am – 6pm.

This exhibition brings together work by Emirati visual artist Shaikha Alketbi, shaped during four years of living and working in Japan. It was here that Alketbi completed her MFA in Global Art Practice at Tokyo University of the Arts, where work featured in the exhibition received a Salon de Printemps award.

Alketbi’s work often begins with a feeling that something familiar is slightly off. She draws from experiences of derealization, when the world around us can suddenly feel distant, dreamlike or unreal. Rather than trying to recreate that feeling, she follows where it leads. Dreams become images. Memories shift. Familiar places take on unfamiliar forms, moving between drawing, painting, film and installation.

Japan gave her plenty of places to look.

Over four years, Alketbi found herself drawn to environments that seemed somehow suspended in time. Places that felt real and imagined at once. The Site of Reversible Destiny – Yoro Park becomes the setting for Book 本 كتاب. The former ACAO Annex hotel in Atami appears in PLAY 遊び لعب. In both, architecture becomes more than a setting. It becomes a way of asking what we are really seeing, and how much of it comes from the world around us, or from somewhere within.

Me and you, we’re not that different, right? takes that question a little further.

Across languages and places, dreams and waking life, the exhibition looks at the strange space between difference and familiarity. At the things we recognize in places that are not our own. And at the possibility that people, places and even states of mind that appear far apart might not be quite so distant after all.

  1. 11am – 12pm

    Small Talk with Rebekah Cheng

Five mornings. Five guests. Five ways into the same question.

Small Talk is an opportunity for us to sit down with someone we’ve met along the way, from the UAE or Japan, for an hour of coffee, baked goods, and conversation. Designers, makers, and influential voices, each bringing a different perspective to our theme: Me and you, we’re not that different, right? Across five mornings, we’ll look at the small things that bring two places closer: how we make, how we live, what we value, and the ideas we carry from one culture into another. No big stage. Just a table, a guest, and a good chat to start the day.

    Panel Discussion

What can we build together that we couldn’t build alone?

The Outpost didn’t begin with a space in Tokyo. It began with people: encounters between the UAE and Japan that became conversations, collaborations, friendships and, eventually, reasons to keep coming back.

We bring together some of the people behind that journey to talk about what happens when an exchange becomes something more lasting. From Shaikha Alketbi’s years between the UAE and Japan to the Ripple Collective’s decision to put down roots in Tokyo, the conversation looks at what each side brings, what changes through working together, and what might still be possible.

Design Session with YL Projects(Registration required)

What does a country look like through the things it designs?

From Japan, the UAE can seem defined by a familiar set of images: skyscrapers, oil, luxury, desert. If we look closer, another picture emerges. A young country with deep cultural roots. Cities changing at remarkable speed. And a design culture still finding, questioning, and defining its own language.

For DESIGNART Tokyo, Ripple Collective and YL Projects bring some of that conversation to Tokyo. Through objects, images and stories, the evening looks at design in the Emirates today: what comes from tradition, what comes from change, and how places as different as Abu Dhabi and Dubai are shaping their own creative identities. And then, the view shifts between the UAE and Japan. What draws Japanese creatives to the Emirates? What do they see when they arrive? And what can happen when two very different design cultures begin to influence one another?

The event will include a panel conversation and audience Q&A featuring Nuno Abreu, Founder of Ripple Collective, Jonathan Kennaugh, Head of Ripple Design Outpost in Tokyo, and moderated by Yoichiro Tamada, Founder and Creative Director at YL Projects.
